HiPP Ingredients Explained

HiPP formulas are made from 43 groups of ingredients, most of which come in several sub-varieties. HiPP ingredient labels can be difficult to navigate because of complex scientific names that are listed. To add to the complexity, most HiPP packaging comes in languages other than English.

Organic Life Start has researched and summarized all ingredients in HiPP formula. HiPP ingredients are categorized into 7 main functional categories (Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats & Oils, Vitamins, Minerals & Electrolytes, Prebiotics & Probiotics, Emulsifiers & Stabilizers).

Proteins

Proteins are fundamental for an infant’s growth and development, as they support muscle growth, immunity, and vital metabolic processes. HiPP formulas primarily use milk-derived proteins, such as whey protein from cow or goat milk, which are gentle on an infant’s digestive system. Whey is especially beneficial for its easier digestibility compared to casein. As a baby progresses through different HiPP formula stages, the whey/casein protein shifts from an initial 60/40 ratio to 20/80.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy for general growth and infant brain development. Just like in natural breast milk, Lactose is the preferred carbohydrate source in organic baby formula ingredients. Lactose promotes the absorption of calcium and helps build gut health. Maltodextrin and starch may also be used in moderation in formulas to help babies feel full longer and regulate energy release. Maltodextrin is only used in HiPP AR formulas, and only select HiPP German formulas include starch. HiPP Dutch ingredients do not include starch or maltodextrin.

Fats & Oils

Fats and oils in HiPP formula provide essential fatty acids for brain, nervous system, and eye development. DHA and ARA are omega fatty acids naturally found in breast milk. HiPP formulas specifically use sustainably sourced organic oils (rapeseed, sunflower, coconut) and beneficial fats like beta-palmitate, which mimics the structure of human milk fats to improve digestion and nutrient absorption. DHA and ARA are usually sourced from organic fish oils, even though HiPP infant formula ingredients may not specifically call out added DHA or ARA in their ingredients list.

Vitamins

Vitamins in HiPP baby formula ingredients support bodily functions like immune support, bone growth, neurological development, and overall cellular health. HiPP formulas provide vitamins closely matching the composition found in breast milk.

  • Vitamin A: added for immunity
  • Vitamin B (B-Complex Vitamins): added for nerve function, cellular health, and energy metabolism
  • Vitamin C: added for bone development
  • Vitamin D: added for antioxidant protection
  • Vitamin E: added for neurological health
  • Vitamin K: added for blood clotting and bone health

Additionally, Choline and inositol help with brain development.

Minerals & Electrolytes

Minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, iodine, potassium, and phosphorus are needed for strong bones, cognitive function, blood production, metabolic functions, and overall physical growth. Electrolytes like sodium, chloride, and potassium help maintain fluid balance, regulate nerve transmission, and help with muscle function.

Prebiotics & Probiotics

Prebiotics and probiotics support digestive health and the development of a robust immune system. Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) in HiPP formulas resemble prebiotic fibers found in breast milk. GOS helps build good gut bacteria, eventually allowing babies to transition to a solid food diet. Specific probiotics like Bifidobacterium Breve (found in certain HiPP formulas) help balance the gut microbiome, potentially reducing the risk of allergies, eczema, and gastrointestinal disturbances.

Emulsifiers & Stabilizers

Emulsifiers and stabilizers create a uniform texture and consistency in HiPP formula. These organic baby formula ingredients prevent ingredient separation and make a mixed formula safe for consumption. Sunflower lecithin is a gentle emulsifier most commonly used in HiPP formulas, sourced naturally and contributing to smooth consistency, easier digestion, and nutrient absorption. Clean ingredient baby formula will only use natural emulsifiers, as opposed to artificial emulsifiers.

HiPP Organic Formula Ingredients

HiPP has gone to great lengths to be open about their supply chain. In the last 20 years, they have disclosed the farm-based origins of HiPP Organic Formula Ingredients, and they have been proactive at making other European manufacturers disclose their ingredients of baby formula. Many ingredients have similar names, but the scientific names used on HiPP labels are there to help parents get additional background about the quality of some ingredients.
