1 Package of Kendamil Stage 1 Formula = about 186 scoops of formula
Kendamil Stage 1 Formula Scoop Size = 4.3 grams of dry formula powder (0.152 ounces)
How much Kendamil Stage 1 should you buy? The estimate for how many units of formula you'll need is based on an assumption that baby formula is the primary source of nutrition within your baby's diet, and takes into account Kendamil Stage 1 packaging and scoop sizes, as well as the Kendamil's recommended dosage at each age. Unless stated "per month", the calculation is a total for the entire age bracket. On average, a typical infant uses 5 cans of Kendamil Stage 1 per month, when fed using Kendamil's feeding instructions. If you supplement with breast milk or other foods, your calculation may be different. Always follow your pediatricians advice for feeding instructions that are unique to your baby.
Kendamil Stage 1 Expiration Date: Please note that Kendamil uses the European expiration date notation, which reads DD/MM/YYYY (day/month/year). This European date format is different to the MM/DD/YYYY format more commonly found in North America. You can learn more about European expiration dates in our Kendamil Expiration Date guide.
The manufacturer may change its packaging style at any moment without notice. Always follow the instructions found on your packaging, even if they differ to the above instructions. We are not able to ship a preferred packaging style since the manufacturer decides which style they will be making in a given batch.

Kendamil Stage 1 Formula Instructions
-
01
SterilizeBegin by washing your hands and sterilizing your equipment and workspace. In order to kill off any residual bacteria that may be in your water, boil 1 liter of water and leave it to cool for up to 30 minutes.
-
02
Check Feeding ChartRead the feeding chart relevant to your specific formula. Depending on your baby's age, add the corresponding water and formula ratios. Use the formula scoop provided inside of your box so as to ensure accurate measurements.
-
03
PrepareClose the bottle with a sterilized cap and shake vigorously until all formula powder has been dissolved and no lumps remain. We recommend placing a nipple cap over the bottle top so as to avoid touching it with your hands.
-
04
Check TemperatureBaby formula is ready for feeding when it reaches body temperature (~98°F). You may cool the formula in the refrigerator in order to reach this desired temperature, and you can test the formula on your forearm to make sure it isn't too hot. Use the formula immediately after preparation.

Important Feeding Information
- Each baby formula uses different mixing proportions. Only use the scoop that is included in your formula.
- Only add water and scoops at the ratios intended by the manufacturer. Do not supplement the milk feeds with any additional ingredients.
- Do not prepare feeds in advance. In order to maintain maximum nutritional value, use the feeds immediately and dispose of any leftovers feed.
- Once prepared, feed should be used within 1 hour. Prepared formula should not be refrigerated, stored, or reheated in any way, as this could increase the risk of bacterial contamination from sources external to the formula, and storage may cause prepared formula to separate.
- Once opened, formula should be used within 21 days. Any unopened formula should not be used after the expiration date printed by the manufacturer on the box.
-
Consult Your Pediatrician

Kendamil Organic is a British-made infant formula produced in the Lake District - a UNESCO World Heritage site in England's North West, where over 220 local farms supply fresh organic milk from grass-fed cows. What sets Kendamil apart from every other European formula is its whole milk philosophy: instead of stripping the fat from milk and adding vegetable oils back in (the standard industry approach used by HiPP, Holle, and virtually every other brand), Kendamil starts with full-cream organic whole milk and keeps the natural milk fat intact. This single decision changes everything - from the nutritional profile to the taste to what they can leave out. Kendamil Organic holds triple certification: EU Organic, USDA Organic, and UK Soil Association - one of the few infant formulas in the world to carry all three. It is also certified Vegetarian, Halal, and Kosher.
Why Whole Milk Matters: MFGM and Your Baby's Brain
Most infant formulas use skimmed milk as their protein base. The fat is removed during processing, and then a blend of vegetable oils (typically palm, coconut, rapeseed, and sunflower) is added back to reach the required fat content. This is cheaper and easier to standardize - but it strips out a critical compound: MFGM (Milk Fat Globule Membrane).
MFGM is the thin membrane that naturally surrounds fat droplets in whole milk. It contains phospholipids, sphingomyelin, and glycoproteins that are also found in human breast milk - and clinical research has linked MFGM supplementation to improved cognitive development scores in infants. A 2014 randomized controlled trial published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that infants receiving MFGM-enriched formula scored comparably to breastfed infants on cognitive assessments at 12 months, while infants on standard formula scored lower. Because Kendamil uses whole milk, MFGM is naturally present - it doesn't need to be extracted, processed, and added back in as a separate ingredient. This is Kendamil's core advantage and the reason the prepared formula has a distinctive golden, creamy appearance rather than the white, watery look of skimmed-milk formulas.
What's NOT in Kendamil - And Why That Matters
Kendamil is as proud of what they exclude as what they include. Here's what you won't find in any stage of Kendamil Organic - and why each exclusion matters for your baby:
- No palm oil. Palm oil is the most common fat source in infant formula worldwide. It's cheap and provides palmitic acid - but in formula, palm oil palmitic acid sits in a different position on the fat molecule (sn-1,3 vs sn-2), which can form insoluble calcium soaps in the gut, leading to harder stools, reduced calcium absorption, and digestive discomfort. Kendamil's whole milk fat provides palmitic acid naturally in the sn-2 position - the same position as in breast milk - eliminating the need for palm oil entirely.
- No fish oil. Most European formulas source DHA (omega-3) from fish oil, which can give the prepared formula a fishy smell. Kendamil uses DHA from marine algae (the organism fish themselves eat to obtain DHA). The result: no fishy odor, and the formula is 100% vegetarian certified. This also makes Kendamil compliant with Halal and Kosher dietary requirements.
- No starch or maltodextrin - at any stage. Many European formulas add starch or maltodextrin from Stage 2 onwards (Holle adds both; HiPP German adds starch from Stage 1). These are cheap carbohydrate fillers that thicken the formula and make babies feel fuller - but lactose is the carbohydrate naturally found in breast milk. Kendamil uses lactose as the sole carbohydrate at every stage, from Stage 1 through Stage 3.
- No soy, no corn syrup, no GMOs. Standard in European formulas but worth noting for US parents comparing to Similac or Enfamil, which commonly use corn syrup solids and soy-derived ingredients.
HMOs: The Breast Milk Compound Other Formulas Are Missing
Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) are complex sugars found naturally in breast milk that play a critical role in infant immunity. They are not digested by the baby - instead, they serve as food for beneficial gut bacteria, help block pathogens from attaching to the gut lining, and support the development of a healthy immune system. Until recently, HMOs were nearly impossible to replicate in formula.
Kendamil Organic is the only organic infant formula that contains naturally occurring HMOs - specifically 3'-Galactosyllactose (3'-GL), which arises naturally from the organic cow's milk lactose used in the formula. Research published in peer-reviewed journals has shown that 3'-GL helps attenuate inflammation in the infant gut by blocking pathogenic bacteria from entering the bloodstream. This isn't a synthetic additive - it's a natural byproduct of Kendamil's whole-milk, lactose-based formulation. Combined with GOS prebiotics (also from organic milk) and nucleotides (building blocks for DNA/RNA repair and immune function), Kendamil delivers a three-layer gut support system that is unique among European organic formulas.
Kendamil Organic vs Kendamil Classic - Is the Premium Worth It?
This is the most common question we get from parents considering Kendamil. The honest answer: nutritionally, they are nearly identical. Both use the same whole milk base, both contain MFGM, both have algae DHA, both are free from palm oil, starch, and maltodextrin. Both are vegetarian, Halal, and Kosher certified. The differences are in certification and one ingredient:
| Feature | Kendamil Organic | Kendamil Classic |
|---|---|---|
| Organic certification | EU Organic + USDA Organic + UK Soil Association | Red Tractor certified (not organic) |
| Whole milk / MFGM / no palm oil | Yes | Yes - identical |
| Algae DHA / Vegetarian / Kosher / Halal | Yes | Yes - identical |
| No starch / no maltodextrin | Yes - all stages | Yes - all stages |
| HMOs / nucleotides | Yes - from organic lactose | Yes - from lactose |
| Prebiotics | GOS only | GOS + FOS (additional prebiotic fiber) |
| Price (800g) | ~$43.60/can | ~$36.40/can |
| Monthly cost (full feeding, Stage 1) | ~$196/month | ~$164/month |
Our recommendation: If organic certification matters to your family - for ethical, environmental, or ingredient-sourcing reasons - Kendamil Organic is worth the premium. If you primarily want the whole-milk / MFGM / no-palm-oil benefits and want to save ~$32/month, Kendamil Classic delivers the same nutritional philosophy at a lower price - and actually adds an extra prebiotic (FOS) that the Organic version doesn't include.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Kendamil different from HiPP and Holle?+
The core difference is the milk base. Kendamil uses whole milk, which naturally contains MFGM (Milk Fat Globule Membrane) - a brain-development compound found in breast milk. HiPP and Holle both use skimmed milk and add vegetable oils to replace the removed fat, losing MFGM in the process. Kendamil also uses algae-derived DHA (vegetarian, no fish smell), while HiPP uses fish oil. Holle matches Kendamil on algae DHA but adds starch and maltodextrin from Stage 2 - Kendamil stays starch-free at every stage. On the other hand, only HiPP includes both prebiotics and probiotics (the Combiotik blend) at all stages - Kendamil has prebiotics but no probiotics. See our full comparison guide.
What is MFGM and why does it matter?+
MFGM (Milk Fat Globule Membrane) is a thin biological membrane that surrounds fat droplets in whole milk. It contains phospholipids, sphingomyelin, and glycoproteins - the same compounds found in breast milk fat. Clinical research, including a 2014 randomized trial in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that infants receiving MFGM-enriched formula scored comparably to breastfed infants on cognitive assessments, while standard-formula infants scored lower. Because Kendamil uses whole milk, MFGM is naturally present - it's not extracted and added as a separate ingredient. Most other formulas use skimmed milk and lose MFGM during processing.
Is Kendamil Organic FDA-approved?+
Kendamil is FDA-registered - meaning Kendamil has notified the FDA of its intent to market infant formula in the United States and the FDA has acknowledged this registration. This is different from FDA "approval" (the FDA does not formally "approve" any infant formula; it reviews submissions and inspects facilities). Kendamil is the first and only UK-made formula to achieve FDA registration for direct US retail sale. The formula is manufactured under strict EU regulations (Commission Delegated Regulation 2016/127) and also carries USDA Organic certification - it is fully legal and safe for US parents to purchase and use.
Kendamil Organic vs Kendamil Classic - what's the difference?+
Nutritionally, they are nearly identical - same whole milk base, same MFGM, same algae DHA, same lack of palm oil/starch/maltodextrin. The two differences: (1) Organic carries EU + USDA Organic + UK Soil Association certification, while Classic carries Red Tractor certification (not organic). (2) Classic includes FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides) as an additional prebiotic fiber alongside GOS - Organic has GOS only. Classic is ~$32/month cheaper at full feeding. If organic certification is important to your family, choose Organic. If you want the same nutritional benefits at a lower price and an extra prebiotic, Kendamil Classic is an excellent choice.
What are HMOs in Kendamil?+
HMOs (Human Milk Oligosaccharides) are complex sugars found in breast milk that support infant immunity. They are not digested by the baby - instead, they feed beneficial gut bacteria and block harmful pathogens from attaching to the intestinal wall. Kendamil contains 3'-Galactosyllactose (3'-GL), an HMO that arises naturally from the organic cow's milk lactose in the formula. It's not a synthetic additive - it's a natural byproduct of Kendamil's whole-milk, lactose-based process. Kendamil Organic is the only organic infant formula in the world that contains naturally occurring HMOs.
What Baby Brezza setting do I use for Kendamil Organic?+
For the Baby Brezza Formula Pro Advanced, use setting 3 for all Kendamil formulas (Organic, Classic, and Goat, all stages). Kendamil uses whole milk powder which is denser than skimmed-milk formulas - some parents find setting 3 gives a more accurate concentration than the occasionally listed setting 4. Always shake or stir the bottle after dispensing and clean the Brezza funnel every 4–5 bottles. See our complete Baby Brezza settings guide for all European formulas.
How does Kendamil taste compared to other formulas?+
Kendamil is widely regarded as the mildest and creamiest-tasting European formula. Two factors contribute: (1) whole milk fat gives it a naturally rich, creamy flavor and a golden color - unlike the thinner, whiter appearance of skimmed-milk formulas, and (2) algae-derived DHA means there is no fishy smell, which is a common complaint about HiPP and other fish-oil-based formulas. Parents frequently report that picky babies who refused other formulas accepted Kendamil readily. The prepared formula also has a pleasant, naturally sweet aroma from the organic lactose - not the metallic or chemical smell associated with high-iron US formulas.
Can I switch from Similac or Enfamil to Kendamil?+
Yes - thousands of US parents have made this transition successfully. Kendamil is nutritionally complete and meets both EU and FDA requirements for infant formula. We recommend transitioning gradually over 5–7 days: start with 75% old formula + 25% Kendamil, then move to 50/50, then 25/75, then 100% Kendamil. This allows your baby's digestive system to adjust. You may notice a change in stool color (slightly more golden) and consistency (softer) - this is normal and reflects the different fat composition (whole milk fat vs palm oil). If your baby was on a specialty formula (HA, Comfort, soy-based), consult your pediatrician before switching. See our Kendamil vs Similac comparison and Kendamil vs Enfamil comparison for detailed breakdowns.
